| I'm Zhaan. Bit of a strange name I know, but I was born on Friday the Thirteenth so I guess I'm just glad they didn't call me "Lucky" for the sake of irony.
Right a little about me, I was born to Mabel and Tommy at Mary's house and she looked after me for the first 6 weeks and then I went to stay with Steve at the Ratpack. It was great there everyone loved me but then everyone does and they really took care of me.
Anyway these are my diary pages. (Most recent entries are at the top, BTW...)

Saturday 8 May 2004
Two more "hoomans" came to visit today. One was really big - a wide man with a shiny head. The other was a little "hooman" - I think that she might not be a fully-grown "hooman".
The little "hooman" spent lots of time playing with me - she didn't get bored at all. I kept trying to lick her - I like licking I do.
Later on, we all went out in the big red growly thing again. I sat in the back with Mrs "hooman" and the little "hooman". "Wide shiny head" sat in the front where Mrs "hooman" usually sits.
We went to Bert and Sadie's house again. "Barbara" came out to see us, and everyone went to see all the strange "not dogs" in the field. They were all making that "baaaaa" noise again. "Barbara" was in with the strange "not dogs". She was giving one of them a fuss, and it wagged her tail, just like I do. This seemed to impress "wide shiny head" a great deal - much more so than when I wag my tail. Strange.
Mrs "hooman" took me into the field, and we found a big mound of earth. I could smell something, so I started to dig. I think DIGGING IS WHAT I WAS MADE TO DO! I dug and I dug and I dug, until the hole was nearly as big as me. I dig, therefore, 'I Zhaan'.
Eventually we all went inside, and I got a chance to play with Bert and Sadie. Sadie told me that the strange "not-dogs" that make the "baaaaa" noise are called "woolley-backs". Apparently "Barbara" spends lots of time with them.
Everyone sat round the table drinking stuff - except the little "hooman" who was making some very strange noises on some sort of keyboard thing upstairs. "Wide shiny head" has a very loud voice. Bert and Sadie's other "hooman" (I think he's called "Steve") made a big fuss of me. I think he's quite soft on me.
After we left Bert and Sadie's house we went for another walk in the woods, with "wide shiny head" and the little "hooman". Mr "hooman" let me off the lead again! I hope this is something that will keep happening. Especially since every time he puts me back on the lead, he gives me a treat. I like treats I do. "Wide shiny head" seemed to struggle on the way back up the hill.
"Wide shiny head" and "little hooman" came back home with us again. Later in the evening - after it had gotten dark - Mr "hooman" put me on my lead again and we all went out. We went to a very strange place that I had never been too before - it had a very interesting smell to it - a mixture of smoke, and some other smell - I don't know what it's called, but it smells really yummy. It was full of "hoomans", and some of them came over to say hello to me. I tried to lick them as best as I could - I like licking I do.
By the time we got home I was absolutely shattered - especially as "little hooman" kept playing with me. I couldn't say no - it was too much fun! But in the end I was almost falling asleep while playing.

Friday 7 May 2004
Mrs "hooman" stayed in again today. Perhaps she's thought better of getting in the mouth of the big growly tube.
In the afternoon we all got in the big red growly thing again. We went up to the house where Bert and Sadie live, and the nice woman called "Barbara". I made sure Sadie had a play with me - whether she wanted to or not.
Then, eveyone started putting shoes on and looking like they were about to go out. I started to get all excited. Mr "hooman" put my lead on, and we all went outside - with Bert and Sadie too!
First, we went through a field with lots of strange looking "not-dogs" in. They made a funny sort of "Baaaa" noise. Some of them seemed quite interested in me, and started chasing me. I wasn't sure what to make of that. We walked down through a gate, then "Barbara" let Bert and Sadie off their leads. I was quite jealous, but this walking thing is such good fun I decided not to let it worry me too much.
We went down some steps and over a river (on a bridge of course - silly) and then we walked through some woods. Bert and Sadie were running round like mad things - I think Sadie was taunting me a bit because I was on a lead. Bert and Sadie went swimming in the river - I thought it looked a bit cold myself, and didn't fancy getting in. But Mr "hooman" encouraged me to have a little paddle in a shallow bit. I was quite thirsty, so I took the opportunity to have a little drink.
Then, something better than all my wildest dreams happened - Mr "hooman" let me off my lead! I ran and ran and ran - it was the best thing EVER!!!! I made sure I had a really good sniff of all sorts of things in the woods, and then I ran round and round chasing Sadie - I didn't manage to catch her though. I was a bit nervous of losing my "hoomans" - I didn't want them to leave me behind - so I made sure they were always in sight.
I did get very muddy though - especially as I tried to jump over a particularly large muddy puddle, I failed somewhat and went "splat" up to my neck in the mud. Still, it was worth it for all the fun running around.
When we got back to Bert and Sadie's house, "Barbara" gave Bert and Sadie a chew, and she gave me one too! I sat down next to Sadie and copied how she chewed the chew. She seemed to get through it an awful lot faster than me. Eventually I gave up. I'm not sure what happened to it then - I think Bert might have eaten it.
When I got home I was absolutely shattered - I fell asleep in my basket in front of the fire.

Thursday 6 May 2004
Mrs "hooman" didn't go out today. Perhaps she didn't feel like getting in the mouth of the long growly tube thing.
When Mr "hooman" let me out of my crate this morning, I was pleased to discover that my new friend, "Dad" and "Nev" were still here. They both made a big fuss of me again. and "Nev" doesn't seem to mind me licking him. I like licking I do.
Then "Nev" went out, and "Dad" and my two "hoomans" went out in the big red growly thing. I sat in the back with Mrs "hooman", which was lovely. She makes a big fuss of me. We went for a long drive, and then we went to visit the two other "hoomans" we see every so often. I think they are called "Nana" and "Papa". I like "Nana". She usually wears things on her feet that leave her toes sticking out, which means I can lick them. I like licking I do.
Then we all got back in the red growly thing and went home again. Then "Dad" left - I think he went to get in another growly thing with "Nev". I did get one last fuss with "Nev" though. I think he likes me. Then Mrs "hooman" went out, and even worse, Mr "hooman" shut me in my crate and went out too. I made lots of noise - even the tortured chicken sound - until I was sure he had gone, then I went to sleep.
Mr and Mrs "hooman" both came home really late, but they made a big fuss of me, so that's OK.

Wednesday 5 May 2004
We went with Mrs "hooman" again this morning, and watched her climb in the mouth of the long growly thing again.
I'm really getting into this walking thing - I just wish the lead Mr "hooman" has me on were a bit longer. I keep pulling and pulling, but it doesn't seem to stretch any. Ground is wonderful. There are all sorts of interesting smells to be smelled.
Later, Mr "hooman" took me out in the big red growly thing. We went for another walk, and he took me to this most amazing place. It was full of the most amazing smells of yummy stuff to eat. There were two really nice "hoomans" in there who made a really big fuss of me. And then they gave me sausages! They were absolutely delicious.
Afterwards, we went to visit yet another "hooman". This time it was another woman who made me stand on a table and put lots of cold metal things on my chest. It seemed to take ages and ages. I kept being poked and prodded, and my "hooman" and the other "hooman" kept talking to each other in very serious voices.
This evening when Mrs "hooman" came home, my two "hoomans" seemed very busy. They did strange things with the sofa to make it all big and flat. Then they put lots of lovely soft things on it. I really wanted to sit on it - it looked very comfy indeed - but Mrs "hooman" wouldn't let me.
Mrs "hooman" seemed to stay up much later than usual. I just went to sleep in my basket in front of the fire. Then, really late, two other "hoomans" came to visit. They made a really big fuss of me. One was called "Dad" and the other one was called "Nev". I did my cute face which they both seemed to like. Then I chased my tail a bit which seemed to entertain them. They were still here when Mrs "hooman" put me to bed.

Tuesday 4 May 2004
This morning, Mr "hooman" put me on my short lead again, and we went out with Mrs "hooman" when she left the house. We walked a little way, and then we just stopped and waited. Shortly afterwards, a HUGE long growly tube thing stopped next to us. It sqeeaked a bit too - perhaps someone had bitten it. Then, it seemed to open lots of mouths, and Mrs "hooman" climbed inside one of them. Then all the mouths shut and the big growly thing moved off again, with Mrs "hooman" inside it. She came back as usual though.

Monday 3 May 2004
Last night, the "hoomans" put me in the new shiny crate. I wasn't too sure about it at first - it wasn't as cosy as the funny smelling plastic box. I made sure I had a good howl so that my "hoomans" would be aware of my concern.
This morning, we got up about the usual time. Mrs "hooman" seemed more relaxed than usual, and didn't seem to mind me jumping up. Normally on Monday mornings she says things like "not on my work trousers, Zhaan". Not sure what that means.
Anyway, the "hoomans" were busying themselves and I sensed they were definitely up to something. I followed them from room to room to make sure I didn't miss anything. They seemed to get lots of bags together, and I saw them put my blue rope and my purple jingly ball in one of them.
Then, a big silver growly thing arrived outside, and we left the house. We got into the back of it, and I sat on Mrs "hooman"'s lap. In the front were two of the "hoomans" that had been to visit us before.
We seemed to be in the growly thing for ages, but eventually we stopped under some trees and got out. There were other "hoomans" already there, who seemed to pay me lots of attention. We went through a little house and then into a garden. Mr "hooman" put me on my nice long lead, so I could have a run around in the garden. The grass was really long, so this was great fun.
Even more "hoomans" arrived, and they came with another dog. It was quite a lot bigger than me, but not as big as Bert and Sadie. I tried to play with it, but it backed off and looked worried. Obviously that is because I am so fierce. They only stayed a little while.
Later, all the "hoomans" started putting boots and things on. Then, Mr "hooman" put my short lead back on. And we all started walking. Yes, walking! Me! Instead of being carried, my "hoomans" took turns to take me on the lead thing. It was FANTASTIC! There was so much stuff to smell, it was just too much to take in. I couldn't stop my tail from wagging.
We went through fields and we went through woods. I did start to get very tired, but I really didn't want to stop - what if the "hoomans" never let me walk outside again? It was brilliant - there were loads of sticks and things, so I made sure I gathered a few of those.
Eventually, we stopped in another garden and all the "hoomans" had a drink. Mr "hooman" got me a bowl of water. There were lots of little "hoomans" in the garden, and they all wanted to make friends with me. I made sure I gave them a good lick to show my appreciation. Then I fell asleep on Mr "hooman"'s lap.
I had to let Mr "hooman" carry me back, as I really was exhausted. I'll just have to hope they let me do it again. We got back in the silver growly thing with the other "hoomans" and went home. I got into my new basket and fell asleep. It was the best day EVER!

Sunday 2 May 2004
The "hoomans" stuck me in the funny smelling plastic box again today, and then went out and left me. I made sure I made lots of noise until I was sure they had gone, and then I had a little snooze. I like snoozing, I do.
When they came back I discovered they had some new toys for me. I now have a pink ball, which is a lot like my yellow ball, but this one isn't dead yet, it still squeaks. My yellow ball just makes a strange "pffft" noise, like my bottom sometimes does. Incidentally, when my bottom makes that noise, the "hoomans" usually say "Oh Zhaan" shortly afterwards and start wafting their hands in front of their noses. I'm not sure what that's all about.
I also have a new plastic bed with a nice cushion that the "hoomans" have put in front of the fire in the lounge for me. I decided I ought to test it, so I curled up in it and had a good snooze.
When I woke up I went into the kitchen to have some water. Much to my surprise, the funny smelling plastic box had gone, and so had my old crate, which the "hoomans" hadn't put me in since I successfully removed a few bars. (Note to self - they never did tell me how impressed they were at my ability to escape). In it's place was a new, shiny brass crate. It seems to have a lot more bars on it than the last one.

Saturday 1 May 2004
Both my "hoomans" were at home with me today. Mrs "hooman" seems to like giving me lots of cuddles. She seems to tell me off less than Mr "hooman" does. I think Mr "hooman" is the leader of our pack.
|
| |
Friday 30 April 2004
Mr "hooman" was pushing the small red growly thing around the house again today. I'm not quite sure what that is all about. The "not-dogs" don't seem to like it very much. The silver one called "Pavlov" runs away very quickly as soon as it starts growling. I wonder if it might want to play with me?
|
| |
Thursday 29 April 2004
I had to spend yet another night in the strange-smelling plastic box again last night. I couldn't be bothered with any howling - I think the "hoomans" must not be able to hear me.
Mr "hooman" went in the "raining box" again this afternoon. I sat outside while he was in there. When he came out, he was all wet and his feet tasted even better than usual. He seemed to pay lots of attention to me licking his feet, and kept telling me to "stop it". He kept moving about so I had to chase them. This was a really fun game.
I decided it was time to explore the "raining box", so I climbed in. The floor was all wet, so I gave that a good lick. Suddenly, the "raining box" started working, much to my surprise. It was very cold. I got out very quickly.

Wednesday 28 April 2004
I was out in the garden being "busy" this afternoon, when I met another new "hooman". She seemed a bit smaller than the "hoomans" I usually see. I think she lives in the house next door. I think her name is "Kirtsy".
She made a very big fuss of me, and seemed particularly interested in my tail. I made sure I wagged it good and proper so she could see it in all it's glory. She was very nice - I think I have made a new friend.
This evening I had another go at trying to get the strange "not-dogs" that live here with me to play. One of them (the big fluffy one called "Schrodinger") made itself look all big and made a strange hissing noise at me. This is not how I play. It was very confusing. I tried to play some more, but in the end it just went away. I will have to try and play with it again another day.

Tuesday 27 April 2004
Mr "hooman" took me out in the big red growly thing again today. We went to that strange place where another "hooman" made a big fuss of me, but then put cold things up my bottom and stuck sharp things in me. They kept telling me I was good though, and gave me lots ot biscuit crumbs, so that was OK. The strange "hooman" also lifted me up and held a strange metal disc to my chest. Not sure what all that was about, but she and my "hooman" seemed to talk about it a lot.
When we got home, two more strange "hoomans" arrived, and started doing strange things to the trees in the garden. I watched them very closely to make sure they weren't doing anything they shouldn't. Still, my "hooman" didn't seem too concerned. By the time they went away, the trees had completely gone. I had to go and have a good sniff, of course.
We played the "lie down" game again a lot this evening. I am getting very good at sticking my bottom up in the air.
|
| |
Monday 26 April 2004
I tried a new howl last night - a really long, mournful one. I thought it might make the "hoomans" want to come and let me out and cuddle them all night. They must not have been able to hear me.
The girlie "hooman" went out again all day today. This meant I had to play more games of "sit" with Mr "hooman". I am very good at that now. We have started a new game called "lie down". Mr "hooman" tells me to sit and then holds a treat in front of my nose. He lowers it to the floor. I dutifully bend down to reach it and stick my bum and my tail proudly in the air. We seem to keep trying this again and again. Today, I have been eating many treats.
This evening, I managed to jump up onto the sofa next to Mr "hooman". I was very proud of myself. I cuddled up right next to him and made myself look cute. The "hoomans" didn't seem sure what to do at first. The girlie "hooman" made lots of "ahhh" noises, and said something about me "getting down". Then she pointed the silver flashy thing at me again - I still have no idea what that's all about. Then Mr "hooman" gently lifted me off onto the floor.
|
| |
Sunday 25 April 2004
Both the "hoomans" were at home with me all day today. I had lots of cuddles. I got to lick some bare feet too. I like licking I do.
|
| |
Saturday 24 April 2004
The "hoomans" are still putting me in the funny small plastic box at night. I'm not sure what that's all about. It would be far more sensible to put me in my old crate - after all, I've created a gap big enough for me to climb out of now. You'd think they'd be pleased.
The "hoomans" seem to go into the room with the "raining box" quite a lot. There is another thing in there that they sit on, then they stand up and pull a lever and it makes the magic blue waterfall work. I find this quite intriguing.
I tried to say hello to one of the funny "not-dogs" today. The fluffy one called "Schro-ginger". She patted me on my nose. I think she was being friendly, but she really needs to do something about those claws.
|
| |
Friday 23 April 2004
I scratched and scratched at the plastic crate last night, but it didn't seem to make any difference. It's almost as if the "hoomans" don't want me wandering about at night. Strange.
There was lots of playing again today. We spent some more time playing "sit", but it seems the better I get at the sitting part the fewer treats I get.
Later in the evening the man "hooman" carried me out of the house. He took me to a strange long path where a big noisy long green growly thing pulled up, and then my girlie "hooman" got out of it. I was very pleased to see her. I wiggled and wiggled, but Mr "hooman" wouldn't put me down.
|
| |
Thursday 22 April 2004
The "hoomans" stuck me in the funny-smelling plastic crate thing again last night. I protested most vocally. It made no difference.
Today, my Mr "hooman" was, as usual, pottering about in the kitchen. At one point, a metal tin fell out of one of the cupboards, and lots of black gooey stuff came out of it. I dutifully helped by licking it up off the floor. It was very sweet. However, Mr "hooman" didn't seem pleased, and shooed me away.
For some reason both the "hoomans" spent the evening calling me "treacle-chops". I'm not sure what that means.
|
| |
Wednesday 21 April 2004
For some reason, my "hoomans" didn't shut me in my crate last night. Instead they shut me in this smaller plastic box with a door. It smelt of those other little "not-dogs" - Schro-ginger and the sliver one, who I think is called "Pavlov". I howled even louder than usual, and tried to dig my way out. It didn't work.
I managed to kill my yellow ball today. It doesn't squeak anymore. It just makes a strange sort of "pfft" sound, which is still good.
Today, my crate mysteriously re-appeared with the bars I had pulled off stuck back on. After I had gone to all that effort! My "hoomans" put me back inside, and I dutifully responded by pulling off one of the other bars. For some reason they didn't seem very pleased.
|
| |
Tuesday 20 April 2004
As usual, I made a huge fuss last night when the "hoomans" shut me in my crate. Not that it made any difference.
Girlie "hooman" went out as usual this morning. Man "hooman" and I had a good play, and then he shut me in my crate again and shut the kitchen door. I could hear that he'd gone off to play with the small red growly thing again. "Right, I'll show him" I thought, and I pulled and pulled on the bars on my crate. I managed to pull two of them off, which made a hole big enough for me to climb through.
Unfortunately, I couldn't open the kitchen door, so I had to settle for sniffing around the bottom and scratching. My man "hooman" seemed very surprised to see me out of my crate. I knew he would be impressed.
|
| |
Monday 19 April 2004
Girlie "hooman" went out again today. I spent the day with man "hooman". There was lots of playing, but for a little while he shut me back in my crate, much to my annoyance. I protested vocally of course, but I don't think he could hear me as he seemed to be pushing the small red growly thing around.
|
| |
Sunday 18 April 2004
We went out in the big red growly thing again today, and we went to see Bertie and Sadie again. I wasn't at all scared this time. Sadie is really nice and likes to play with me. She even let me chew on her nylabone. Bertie is a bit grumpier, but I think he likes me really. I am very cute after all.
Sadie told me that my "not-dogs" are called "hoomans". Apparently the best way to get on with them is to let them think they are in charge, and then they might spoil you and rub your chest. She says the man "hoomans" are the best.
As well as my "hoomans" and Bertie and Sadie's "hoomans", there were two other "hoomans" there too. I think they were the ones that came to visit me earlier this week. They kept pointing a silver box at me that flashed. I have noticed that my "hoomans" seem to do that a lot too. They seem to like it best when I tilt my head at a cute angle before the flashy thing goes off.
I like going to visit Bert and Sadie. They're "hoomans" seem to think I'm very cute. They are obviously very wise.
|
| |
Saturday 17 April 2004
Last night I tried rattling the bars and everything. They still didn't come and let me out until the morning.
The girlie "not-dog" stayed at home today. That was good, as she seems to like cuddling me. At one point, she got into a big "raining box" and stood there and got all wet. Then she got out and seemed to get annoyed when I licked her wet legs and feet (I like licking I do). I was only trying to help.
My "not-dogs" also have this thing they go and sit on, and then they stand up and pull a lever, and it makes this excellent swirly blue waterfall. I like to watch this - it is endlessly fascinating.
They still keep taking me out in the garden to be "busy". I think this means I'm supposed to go to the toilet.
|
| |
Friday 16 April 2004
Once again my best efforts to protest at my incarceration last night went unheeded. Still, I do seem to get a nice breakfast when the "not-dogs" finally come and let me out.
The girlie "not-dog" went out again today, so I spent some more time with "Hun". I'm getting quite good at the "sit" game. I've also been exploring under the sofa, as my favourite yellow squeaky ball seems to have a habit of rolling under there. I would like to sit on the sofa, it looks really comfy, but I still can't quite jump that high.
I spent some time trying to sniff the small "not-dogs" today. I wanted to play, but they kept making themselves all big and making strange hissing noises at me. The big black fluffy one swiped my nose - they have very sharp claws. I don't know what that's all about.
|
| |
Thursday 15 April 2004
Today was much like yesterday. The girlie "not-dog" went out again early in the morning, and I spent the day at home with Mr "not-dog". I think his name might be "Hun" - that's what the girlie "not-dog" seems to call him.
We had some more games of "sit", which was good - until the "not-dog" seemed to want me to play without getting the treats. I did get a nice fuss each time I sat, though.
In the evening we went out in the big red growly thing again. This time the girlie "not-dog" was there, so I got to sit on her lap. Laps are good. When we got out of the big red growly thing we went into this big hall full of "not-dogs" and loads of other dogs. These dogs were all shapes and sizes - most of them were bigger than me, but some of them were absolutely huge. My "not-dogs" went and sat down and I sat on the girlie "not-dog"'s lap. Another dog nearby was growling at me, but I was really big and brave and didn't growl back.
There were lots of dogs and "not-dogs" walking round in a circle. The dogs were on those funny rope things my "not-dogs" put on me when they take me out into the garden to be "busy". After the walking round in the circle they did all sorts of other strange things like throwing toys around and sitting. Not sure what all that was about.
Shortly before we left a fairly big dog came bounding over towards me. I growled at it, and then this really funny noise like a "woof" came out of my mouth. It quite took me by surprise. Not at all like the tortured chicken noise I've been working so hard on perfecting.
|
| |
Wednesday 14 April 2004
Last night I did the tortured chicken noise real good and proper, but it didn't seem to make any difference. Not even the quacking sound got the "not-dogs" to come to me until morning.
The female "not-dog" with the long hair went out really early this morning - not long after we'd all got up. I'm not sure where she went. She didn't come back until the evening.
So I spent the day with the male "not-dog". He took me out in the big red growly thing again, only this time he took me in my pen. Perhaps that's because the girlie "not-dog" wasn't there with her lap for me to sit on. Back at home I spent the day doing my best to distract the "not-dog" with my squeaky toys, but for some reason he kept throwing them away. I brought them back every time, but he just kept throwing them away again. Strange.
The "not-dog" has started playing a great new game with me with some yummy treats. He says "sit", and all I have to do is put my bottom on the floor and I get the goodies. I have decided I like this game.
I'm still not sure what the whole deal is with the being dragged out in the garden every hour or so. They still keep telling me to be "busy". I quite like chewing dandelions, they are surprisingly tasty. Digging holes is fun too - I have noted that this is far more successful than attempting to dig whilst I am sat on a "not-dog"'s lap.
|
| |
Tuesday 13 April 2004
I was really loud in the pen last night. I tried out some new noises and everything, but they didn't come and let me out until the morning by which time I was bursting for a wee. Memo to self: try out the tortured-chicken noise if they shut me in again tonight.
After breakfast the "not-dogs" took me out in the big red growly thing again. We went to some strange place where another "not-dog" made a big fuss of me. I thought she seemed very nice. I wasn't too impressed when she stuck something up my bottom - it was a bit on the cold side - but she let me lick her face afterwards so I forgave her. I like licking I do. She gave me some nice biscuit crumbs, and just as I was enjoying them she stuck a sharp thing in my shoulder. This came as a bit of a shock. Then she gave me another biscuit, and she did it again, which I really wasn't expecting. But then she let me lick her face again, so that was OK.
We got back in the big red growly thing again, but instead of going home we went to some other place. Lots of "not-dogs" kept putting small white things through a slot in a bigger red thing. Strange. Anyway, everyone seemed to be paying attention to me, so that was OK. I got lots of cuddles. I do wish my "not-dogs" would put me down when we're outside though - I'm sure there are plenty of things down there in need of a very good sniff, and possibly even a chew.
Later, back at home, some other "not-dogs" came to visit. They seemed to be very interested in me. I returned the compliment by initially being very interested in them, jumpung up at their knees and sniffing their ankles. Unfortunately, all the excitement of the day caught up with me a bit and I fell asleep in front of the glowy thing I think they call a "fire".
|
| |
Monday 12 April 2004
The "not-dogs" put me in that pen thing again last night. This time I made sure I had a good loud whinge about it so they would know I was not impressed. Sometimes they put me in it in the daytime too - it seems to have something to do with when I can smell funny food, or when they are pushing the small red growly thing (different from the big red growly thing) around the floor. Not sure what that's all about.
Saw the small other "not-dogs" again today. The black one seems interested in me. I think she is called "Shrove-ginger". The silver one made herself all big and made a hissing noise at me. I'm not sure what that was supposed to mean. Perhaps that was little "not-dog" language for "hello". She ran away.
I think my name is "Zhann". This is good. I thought at first they said "Dan" and I didn't want a boys name.
Memo to self: must remember to whinge louder if they shut me in that pen thing again tonight.

Sunday 11 April 2004
Last night the "not-dogs" put me in some sort of pen and left me in the dark. I was not very impressed, but I was pretty tired so I let them get away with it this time. Memo to self: make up for that if they do it again.
It turns out that the two "not-dogs" that brought me here share the house with two other "not-dogs". These are different "not-dogs". They have a leg in each corner like me, but they smell funny - not like a dog. One is black and fluffy, the other one is sort of silver and black stripes. They don't say "woof" either, they make some sort of funny "mew" sound. They came to look at me while I was in my pen. They seemed suspicious, and didn't look much like they wanted to be my friends.
Later, my new "not-dogs" took me out in the red growling thing again. It didn't seem to take so long this time. We saw two of the biggest dogs I have ever seen. They were absolutely ginormous. I wasn't too sure about them at first, as they seemed so very big. I tried to hide - now where was it? - oh yes, on the "lap" of some other "not-dogs" that seemed to be there.
Eventually I decided to say hello to the big dogs. One of them is called Sadie and she was nice. She played with me. I ran over to the other one who is called Bertie. He barked at me for being too enthusiastic, but he made friends with me afterwards.
The other "not-dogs" seemed nice. They let me lick them. I like licking I do.
All this was very tiring. This was not helped by the fact that my "not-dogs" kept dragging me out in the garden and telling me to be "busy". There are lots of things to sniff in the garden. It's good fun to try and eat dead leaves and pebbles, but the "not-dogs" keep taking them away from me. The "not-dogs" seem to get bored of exploring the garden very quickly, and they always take me back in after I've been to the loo. Typical, just when it's starting to get fun.

Saturday 10 April 2004
Woke up this morning at the ratpack as usual. Chewed a pigs ear and played with my brother. He stood on my head which was kind of annoying. He's bigger than I am.
Later in the morning two "not-dogs" came and started poking their fingers through the bars. One of them seemed kind of familiar - I'm sure he came to visit a few days ago. They seemed to be paying far more attention to me than to my brother, despite his best efforts to be noticed.
A little later the "not-dog" called Steve came and took me out of my kennel, and handed me to the long-haired "not-dog" who had been looking at me earlier. We got into a big red thing with another "not-dog", and then the big red thing growled and started to move. I decided the best thing to do was go to sleep.
Eventually the big red thing stopped growling and the "not-dog" carried me out. I got put down on the grass and discovered that the "not-dog" had attached me to some sort of rope thing that stopped me running where I wanted. She kept telling me to be "busy", but I'm not sure what that means. I was bursting for a wee though, so I had one and that seemed to make her happy. She then carried me into what I understand is my new house.
I've had a good sniff around - there seems to be plenty of things to chew. Sometimes I get growled at when I chew things, and other times it seems to make the "not-dogs" laugh. I'm not altogether sure what's going on.
I've had lots of sits on the "not-dogs" - they have these things called "laps" which are dead comfy and warm. I have decided that cuddles are good.

Monday 5 April 2004
I met a new "not-dog" when I was just 7 weeks old and he came to visit me at the Ratpack Kennels where my brother tried his hardest to be the first in line to be picked but I knew he stood no chance as I'm far prettier and way more inteli.. intelli... clever. This one seems to like me. Perhaps he will be back.
